Things to Do in Plain City, Ohio
Plain City is one of my favorite small towns in Ohio. Maybe it is because my grandparents lived their whole lives beside the Dairy Queen, and I could go there as a little girl and get ice cream, or maybe it is the tractors that rumbled through town every summer, bringing the country feel to life. The nostalgia I remember still lingers in this little burg, and if you ever get here, I am sure you’ll find it as charming as I do.
I want to share my 5 favorite things to go and do whenever I return to the area.
Der Dutchman Restaurant Plain City, Ohio
Amish country cooking is something that makes my mouth water and waistband expand! Der Dutchman has been serving up homemade pies and fresh donuts for as long as I can remember. Their bakery is filled with all kinds of delicious goodness!
An evening out to dinner here will not disappoint, and you can order some of their famous broasted chicken or get the Amish-style family meal. You might ask what is an Amish style meal. It is where you can order 2-3 meat choices and choose from a plethora of side dishes, and you will end your meal with your choice of dessert. This is served all-you-can-eat and is brought to your table in serving bowls and platters.
After you indulge, take some time to shop at the Carlise Gift Shop. I love walking through and seeing all the unique gifts and trinkets throughout the store.
Across the street from the restaurant is a small petting zoo area where you can pet some goats, and the kids can play on the swingset before heading home.
On a personal note, my grandpa came here almost every morning for breakfast, where he would eat at the “farmer’s table” or “the liar’s table”. He has since passed on into eternity, but whenever I come here, I fondly remember him and how he liked his coffee HOT!
Pastime Campground and Park
This sweet little campground is nestled into a small corner of Pasttime Park where they offer 58 campsites sites ranging from water/electric to primitive tent sites. Camping in Plain City is enjoyable, and the sites are large with plenty of shade.
Every site here comes with a picnic and fire ring, and wood can be purchased at the office for an evening of making s’mores by the fire. There are on-site shower houses that are very nice and conveniently located.
Amenities they have on the property are a 9-hole disc golf course, 1/2 mile walking path, and a brand new playground for the kids! A short walk away from your campsite is the Plain City Aquatic Center, where you can spend the afternoon enjoying the waterpark or utilize the basketball and volleyball courts for some family fun.
Year-Round Farm Markets in Plain City, Ohio
Locally sourced foods and farm-grown produce are some of the best things about traveling through Midwest destinations. Yutzy’s Farm Market has been family-owned and operated for over 40 years and is one of my favorite places to stock up on Amish meats and cheeses, fresh vegetables, and home-baked goods. I like to take an hour to walk through the store, place a meat and cheese order, and meander through the outside “corn crib” to gather my farm fresh finds.
You’ll want to grab some house-made root beer and sit on the poly furniture under the awning for a moment and enjoy a minute out in the country! Once you’ve been here, you will keep coming back for more.
If one farm market wasn’t enough for you, check out The Cheese House. This specialty market has high-quality meats and cheeses, handmade baked goods, and specialty gourmet foods all under one roof. You can fill your cupboards with their bulk foods and spices for a fraction of the cost you pay at a chain grocery store. While you’re here, you can grab a snack or ice cream at the cafe and meander through The Corner Cupboard, a small store full of antique treasures, homemade gifts, and collectibles with an Amish touch.
Shops in Plain City, Ohio
Millwest Furniture. With an Amish heritage still lingering in the community, this furniture store is a perfect stop to browse. You would not know it by looking at them today, but the owners were raised Amish, and they run their business with the integrity you see from that community. I love stopping in here to run my hands over the heirloom-quality, Amish-made furniture!
Plain City is a delightful town to visit for the day and it is just a short drive to Dublin, Ohio where you can stay and explore as well. My go-to place to stay in Dublin is the Embassy Suites and we also love hiking and exploring Glacier Ridge Metro Park just outside of Plain City.
If you have never been to this small town, you should come. It is worth the visit and you will love the charm of the small-town feel.
Happy Adventures,
Brandy
