Maumee Bay State Park Campground

Northern Ohio offers many places to camp; how do you pick a place along the expansive shores of Lake Erie?  We recently went to Maumee Bay State Park Campground in Oregon, Ohio, where we were treated to a delightful campground destination. It is situated on the beautiful shores of Lake Erie, with the amenities of Mother Nature all around. The stunning hikes, colorful birds, and the beauty of Lake Erie are all just steps away from your campsite.

Camping here is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream location.

Getting to Maumee Bay Campground

Getting to the campground at Maumee Bay State Park is easy, and the roads are well paved. Navigation and getting to the campground office are simple and goes without a hitch! We were able to pull into the parking spaces provided at the campground office without any problem, and there were plenty of spots. Check-in here is quick, and they seem to have to process down to a tee. We were given 2 parking passes for our site and told, “Do NOT lose this; we do NOT replace them.” It was a little disconcerting, but I had no plans on losing our parking pass.

How are the sites at Maumee State Park?

The sites at Maumee State Park are AMAZING and we loved them. They are spacious, beautiful, and private, making this a great place to camp! Each site has ample bushes, mature trees, and plenty of greenery outlining the side and back of your site.  We felt this made the site very protected and quiet! There is a lot of sunshine on your site since the trees are maturing and growing there, most sites look like they are partial or full sun.

Pulling into the site was easy enough. All the sites here at Maumee Bay campground are back in but there is good space between sites to get your unit backed in nicely. Sites here are blacktopped and fairly level, we had to use a few leveling blocks to raise one side up.

The site we had was 210. I chose this one because it was near the bathroom and it had a very nice level paved pad. ALL the sites here at Maumee Bay have a picnic table and firepit for you to use during your trip. Sites are electric only, offering 30/50 amp, so make sure you bring water containers for toting this precious commodity.

Amenities at Maumee Bay

Maumee Bay SP campground has a good number of restrooms throughout the campground. They are well kept and offer flushing toilets, sinks, and showers. The shower stalls are nice sized and were very clean while we were there. Water pressure was good and has warm water for most of your shower.

We were very impressed with the updated and easy-to-use sewage dump station. They have provided hoses, trash receptacles, and water at the location for you. Here in this area you can find the potable water fill-up station and can restock your water tank. It is all located in one area, making it easy to take care of these needed items.

Camp Store

The camp store is well stocked with items that you might need while you are camping. I took a look around and if you forgot your smores kit, they have you covered. They also carry your basic needs, like milk, eggs, and BACON! The store is located right as you enter the campground inside the area where you register.

Amenities At the Lodge

Maumee Bay Lodge is located a short drive away, there you can use the indoor pool for $8.00 per person or check out the other amenities there in the lodge. The restaurant is quite nice and has stunning views of the lake, we have enjoyed many cups of coffee there while we watched the waves. The recreation areas include a game room, racquetball courts, playgrounds, and an outdoor pool area.

Pets Are Allowed!

Pets are allowed here at Maumee Bay State Park Campground and they have plenty of space for you to take Rover on walks and hikes through the area.

Things to Do At Maumee Bay State Park

Swimming and Boating:

This state park offers a plethora of things to do while you enjoy the shores of Lake Erie.  You’re on the lake so what comes to mind first? Boating and Swimming are the top two things for me. The state park features two sand beaches, one on the Lake Erie shore and the second along the park’s inland lake. These beach areas are large and have ample parking for you to use. We enjoy lazing on the shores listening to the waves of the gorgeous lake hit the sand.

I’d say this is one of my favorite beaches along the shores of the Northeast region of Lake Erie. Beach area access offers bathrooms and changing areas for you to use while you are there. It makes getting those sandy kids cleaned off easy before heading back to the campsite.

Boating here is excellent and the Maumee State Park has a 32-slip marina on Lake Erie. You can rent a boat and try your hand at navigating a course on Lake Erie or you can head over to the 57-acre inland lake inside the park. This inland lake is suitable for sailing, canoeing, and other non-motorized boat use and there is a life jacket loaner board located here for your convenience.

FISHING on Lake Erie:

Lake Erie, known as the “walleye capital of the world,” offers some of the best fishing opportunities in the Midwest. Great catches of walleye, channel catfish, freshwater drum, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch excite the fisherman/woman. Kids love the fishing area at the man-made inland lake near the lodge. This inland lake offers good pan fishing opportunities and has two wheelchair-accessible fishing piers, located near parking area #7. We can certainly say this is a kid-friendly family fishing area! This is a bonus for families because it is near calmer waters and catching fish from the shoreline and piers is easier for the little ones.

PLEASE NOTE: A valid Ohio fishing license is required for adults.

GOLF:

“Maumee Bay’s unique 18-hole “Scottish Links” style golf course has low, rolling mounds, bent grass fairways, greens and tees, numerous sand bunkers and ponds.” per the website. I have only been golfing once in my life but as you enter towards the Lodge you can see the fairways. It looks like an amazing place to tee up!

NATURE CENTER:

Trautman Nature Center located next to Maumee Bay Lodge and is equipped with interactive displays, a research laboratory, and viewing windows. We love the nature center here because of the viewing windows and coming here any time of the year has spectacular bird watching. The last 3 weeks of May are our favorite time to come because of the migrating birds.

TRAILS:

Maumee Bay State Park offers several miles of trails that will take you through swamp and marsh wetlands, open meadows, ponds, and beaches. There are multiple styles of trails and all of them are rated easy and family-friendly. While hiking here you are given stunning views of Lake Erie and the protected marshes of the area.

  • Inland Lake (paved-biking & jogging) – 3.0 miles
  • Interpretive Boardwalk (hiking) ADA accessible – 2.0 miles
  • Multi-Use Trail – 2.5 miles
  • Mouse Trail (hiking) – 2.5 Miles – Easy

Pro-Tip: Ohio’s weather along the Lake can change quickly, take layers while exploring.
