Back 40 BBQ

Settled back off the road and hidden from view is the Back 40 BBQ in Middlefield, Ohio. Owned and operated by Steven Miller, this BBQ joint has become a sought-after location for friends and family to gather for the best BBQ in town! Where else can you go and get a meal tailored to your specific BBQ foodie desires?

As we walked through the doors to Back 40 BBQ, we were assailed by the heavenly scent of the smokers from the back room. Seriously, our mouths were watering before we even saw anything set before us. The first thing out of my mouth was, “This place smells amazing!”

The whole vibe of Back 40 BBQ has a quaint rustic appeal with barn wood and beams on the walls, and old tin signs are placed throughout the welcoming room. In winter, they have a delightful fire burning in the fireplace where we all sat down for a moment to take in the Back 40 surroundings. We felt right at home as we visited with the other guests and the owner.

Admittedly, the scents coming from the kitchen were driving me crazy! I could not wait to see what the BBQ was going to look like. However, before the main BBQ came out, our family was treated to a spread of appetizers that consisted of pork stuffed mushrooms, a lovely blooming onion, and succulent wings. It was delicious! I had to pace myself not to fill up on the pre-BBQ deliciousness!

As each item was coming out of the back kitchen, my jaw kept dropping. I’m sure my eyes were as big as the plates of food! The side dishes were phenomenal. Hand-cut french fries and loaded baked potatoes were to die for, and the baked beans were like nothing I had ever tasted.

The plates of amazingness kept coming, and as he sat down the slabs of ribs and loaded chicken breasts, I was instantly in a meat coma! I can tell you about the tenderness of the ribs and how the meat just came right off the bone but honestly, you HAVE to come here yourself.

And there is something about Amish hospitality that can’t be explained. They open their place to you, and you are not just a customer; you’re a welcomed guest. Steven, the owner, let us take a walk back to the beautiful backyard where the Welcome to the Ranch sign hangs, beckoning you to come and enjoy the acreage.

A fire pit with benches is available and gives you a place to sit to enjoy the stunning countryside with a warm fire. The back deck on the house is covered with bird feeders and places to sit back and enjoy nature. I honestly did not want to leave the sanctuary of the Back 40 BBQs…… Back 40.

Back 40 BBQ offers:

Appetizers:

Stuffed Mushrooms, Bruschetta, Shrimp Tacos, Port Sliders, Blooming Onion, Grilled Pizzas, Mozzarella Sticks, Wings, Calamari, or Chicken/Shrimp Quesadillas.

Meats:

1/2 slab ribs, Steaks, Fish, Chicken Breasts, Chicken Legs and Thighs, Pork Tenderloin, Half-pound Burgers with Bacon, egg, hash brown, Swiss, tomato in barbecue sauce. Loaded chicken Breast, or Grilled Salmon.

Vegetables:

Peas, Corn, Baked Beans, or California Blend

Potatoes:

Fries, Loaded Baked Potato, Redskins with mushrooms, Onions and peppers

House Salad:

with sweet and spicy house dressing, pasta salad, potato salad, or Cole slaw

Select 2 Desserts

Deserts:

Fresh Fruit, Date Pudding, Chocolate Raspberry Mousse Cake, any flavor Cheesecake, Fruit Slush, Homemade Ice Cream, or Homemade Pies.

So, you want to go and have this amazing BBQ right now, don’t you?! However, this BBQ joint is by dine-in reservation only or carry out. You can’t just show up here and wait to be seated. You have to plan to come and call to see when you can get one of these coveted reservation spots! While we were there, he told us he is booked 3 months out at the moment!

But don’t be too disappointed; he does have a cancellation list. You can make your reservation and then put your name on the list to call you if he gets a cancellation. He explained that you could usually get in a little sooner if your schedule is flexible.

This is now one of my top BBQ destinations so far, and honestly, it will take a lot to beat it. We HIGHLY recommend it to you and hope you can make it here someday to imbibe in the award-winning BBQ!
