Bob’s Backyard BBQ in Lancaster, Ohio
I don’t consider myself a foodie or even a food writer, but the more we travel and experience great restaurants around the United States, I find myself drawn to share about some of our favorites. Bob’s Backyard BBQ was a delicious stop Matt and I made on a couple’s trip to Lancaster, Ohio. Admittedly, we love BBQ, but this place blew us away. Why is Bob’s Backyard BBQ one of our favorites?
As soon as we opened the door to go into Bob’s Backyard BBQ, the smell of smoked meat overwhelmed us right away! My mouth immediately began to water, and I could not get my order in fast enough.
The Menu
Bob’s offers a full menu of absolutely amazing offerings. Seriously, they have everything a BBQ lover could want. Do you want beef? They’ve got brisket. Do you want pork? That’s covered as well with pulled pork, locally made sausage, and Saint Louis Style ribs. If chicken is your thing, well, they have wings and pulled chicken, smoked and ready for you! Lastly, if you desire some turkey, you’re covered. I mean, they have it all.
We both ordered our favorites; I ordered brisket, and Matt is a pulled pork kind of guy. However, the owners, Bob and Maggie, showed up while we were ordering and told us about their wings, so we added those too. One other notable menu item is the side dishes. There were so many to choose from … and what were we to do, except to order one of each. Cheesy potatoes, corn casserole, coleslaw, and baked beans were added to the ticket.
Bob’s Backyard BBQ story
Matt and I slid into our seats to wait for our order to come up, and Maggie, the owner, came over. As a writer, I always want to hear the story about the how and why behind a place. I asked Maggie to share about how Bob’s Backyard BBQ came to be.
The Story:
Imagine my smile, as she said, “it all started in our backyard.” She went on to tell us that Bob had gotten a smoker, and for an entire summer, he tried to perfect his barbeque style. He loved the science of smoking meat, and it became a passion. Eventually, she said their friends and family encouraged them to start a business. She went on to explain, “We knew we liked our food, but we weren’t sure people would actually pay for our food. So, we started a food truck business. After a few years we outgrew the space and decided to open a storefront.”
Well, I am sure glad their friends and family were persistent because after she shared that story, our food was ready and brought to our table. It was time to see if everyone was right about Bob’s BBQ.
The BBQ
Let me just say, “I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE BBQ here, everyone was correct” It was fantastic! Everything was so tender and juicy and smoked to perfection. I think Bob has the perfected recipe just right.
We had added the wings to our order, and I was curious to try those because I had never had smoked wings. I don’t think I have ever had such deliciousness. As I write this blog, I want to get in my car, drive 2 hours and get me some! (Why do they have to be so far away?)
I would be remiss to not mention the side dishes. They are ridiculously good. Normally, I shy away from eating too many baked beans, but these were uniquely flavored and I could not stop. There is a secret ingredient in the baked beans, so when you try them, try to figure out that special flavor.
