Things to Do Indoors in Gulf Shores, Alabama

We all know that sometimes when we are traveling with kids, the weather can get in the way of our family fun! While our family comes to the Alabama Gulf Coast for many reasons, spending time on the white sandy beaches on the Gulf of Mexico rank right up there of things we want to be doing. On that occasional off-weather day, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach offer plenty of things to do to keep the kids happy, even if it is inside.

Thank you to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism for creating this hosted itinerary. As always, all opinions are mine

Orange Beach Indian and Sea Museum

One of the best things about the Orange Beach and Indian Museum is that this little treasure is housed in a 1910 schoolhouse and is entirely free! We were surprised at all the unique and historical artifacts that have been curated and brought together to make this location a gathering of living history. I found this museum a true gem because they have brought items that you can touch, feel, and experience out of the cases. You don’t just learn with your eyes, but you can use all of your senses to have a fuller and richer understanding of Orange Beach, AL history.

Open year-round on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Mom tip: Keep your eyes peeled for the dugout canoe that brings to life the history of the indigenous people that called this part of Alabama home.

Gulf State Park Nature Center

If there is one thing you should know about me, it is that I love nature. Everything about it makes my heart beat a little faster and my smile bigger. Coming to the Gulf State Park Nature Center was a win-win for me. I got my nature fix, and the kids learned something too.

You will find all kinds of native wildlife represented here, and if you come during a program, you might even get to meet a wildlife ambassador up close and personal. Within the nature center, the family will find native turtles snakes, and below the center, there is a great space to see some of the birds that call Gulf State Park home.

The nature center is in the Gulf State Park campground, and there is a $2.00 per vehicle entrance fee to enter; however, the nature center is free.

Monday-Saturday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Closed Sunday

National Naval Aviation Museum

The National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida, is just a short drive from Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. This one-of-a-kind naval aviation museum will send the rainy day blue packing while you meander through this fantastic complex.

I was BLOWN away at the naval history housed within the walls of this museum and am always looking to return because I did not feel like I had enough time to explore everything. You will journey through the evolution of Naval Aviation and encounter hands-on experiences as your family enjoys American history, interactive exhibits, and a collection of aircraft and artifacts that will astound them.

Monday-Sunday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Mom-tip: Check the website for the most up to date information on hours and how to visit on the National Naval Aviation Museum

Escape Room

Escape rooms have become all the rage, and while they entertain, they also make you think and create a space for teamwork. If you have never done an escape room with your family, a rainy day in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores is the perfect time to give it a try. Your family will work the puzzles and riddles until you have cracked the code and escaped.

Mom Tip: Studies show that traditional puzzles improve brain functions. Since the main objective of escape rooms is to walk out of scenarios utilizing puzzles, you can expect this to be a great mental exercise for you and your whole family.

Sunliner Diner

Our family loves to eat, and sometimes we need the upbeat 50’s music and a meal in the Cadillac inside the Sunliner Diner. Come dance the bummer weather away inside this retro diner and have a meal that will bring a sense of happiness. As soon as you open the door to the Sunliner Diner, you are whisked away to a decade that sang its way through tough times and danced when it was kind of taboo.

Grab your newspaper-style menu and pour over all the choices! There are just too many to choose from, and honestly, you might just find yourself ordering more than you can eat.

Mom-tip: Breakfast is served all day, so you can fill up on comfort food any time or order up plates of deliciousness, with a milkshake to go with

Our family loves Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama! Every time we go, we find something new to enjoy and experience while we are there exploring. What keeps us coming back year after year? It is the stunning sunsets, beautiful beaches, great places to eat, and things to do.

Happy Adventures,
