We are beginning to gather gear for the great Gleason backcountry hike. In 2016, we did day hikes at Rocky Mountain National Park, Mount Rushmore, and Great Smoky Mountain National Park, and we were BITTEN by the hiking bug. We are getting ready for a major backcountry hike as a family.
Preparing for a backcountry hike can be a daunting task for both a family and a single person. As a parent, I find it overwhelming to help my kids pack for such a trip. The cost of gear can add up quickly, especially since children keep growing. That’s why I’m trying to find reasonably priced gear that won’t break the bank. Despite the challenges, I had one major goal to accomplish on December 31st, and I’m proud to say I achieved it.
I love a good bargain, especially when it comes to top-quality gear for a backcountry hike. That’s why I made sure to hit up REI’s garage sale in Dublin, Ohio. Despite the bitter cold, I arrived at 5:30 am and eagerly waited in my car for the line to form. And it was worth it – as the fifth person in line, I was able to snag three Osprey backpacks and three excellent REI tents. It was a great feeling to save so much money while still getting top-of-the-line gear. And to top it all off, we even found a Yakima to secure everything to the top of our Buick Enclave. If you’re planning a backcountry adventure, don’t miss out on the chance to score amazing deals at the REI garage sale. Trust me; it’s worth the early wake-up call!
All that to say, I spent $800.00, and full retail was well over $2,500.00. Thank God for the REI garage sale. REI.com for those of you who are not aware of the retailer. REI no longer does the in person garage sale but you can shop the used section online for great deals. REI Discounts
We have a LONG way to go to gather the needed gear, but I am thrilled to have finished the year with amazing finds.

As I updated my blog today, I was smiling. Abbie was 9 when I started this blog, and she is now 16. This trip we were prepping for began a passion for backcountry hiking, travel and family memories and bonding.
