You’re probably reading this because you are asking yourself, “Why should I go to a Great Homeschool Convention?” I have been homeschooling for 23 years and have attended these conventions since their inception. My father owned Good Steward Books for 25 years, and I would go along to help him and register as an attendee so I could sneak off to listen to workshops when I could.  Homeschool Conventions are necessary for homeschool moms, dads, and kids.

Here are my 5 Reasons YOU should attend a homeschool convention.

Reason #1 Find New Homeschool Curriculum and Resources

Ask any homeschool mom their reason for attending a homeschool convention, and she will tell you she loves looking at all the curriculum.

Great Homeschool Conventions brings together all the BEST there is in homeschooling for their exhibit hall. When the doors open in the morning, and you can head into the vendors, you can be overwhelmed.

Aisles and aisles of amazingness await you. I am not even kidding! I would consider myself a curriculum junky and have tried almost everything there is to try. So, that being said, keep to your list. Do as I say, not as I do.

  • Start at one end of the exhibit hall and work your way to the other end.
  • Don’t buy anything on your first pass through.
  • Take business cards and catalogs for future reference.
  • Make notes in your GHC program guide next to the exhibitors’ names noting their booth numbers so you can find your way back.
  • Be sure to support the exhibitors by making purchases at the convention. They have made a lot of financial and time commitments to be there. Many are mom and pop shops who love homeschooling families!

Reason #2 Opportunity to Meet Other Homeschooling Families

Often we feel alone in our homeschooling journey and a homeschool convention will give you the opportunity to meet other homeschoolers. I admit, when I am in a sea of people who are doing the same thing I am, I suddenly don’t feel so alone. Looking around the event helps me know I am not the only one feeling the feelings, schooling the children, and walking this journey.

Ways to meet others at a convention:

  • Visit the information booth for up to date homeschool information.
  • Grab a coffee and start a conversation with someone.
  • Organize a “meet-up” for homeschool moms from your groups.
  • See if any of your friends are going to be there and have them introduce you to others.

#3 Attend Workshops and Sessions to Help YOU Homeschool

After homeschooling for 23 years, I can confirm that you never stop learning and teaching better. Each child is so different, and every one of them learns so differently. There are NO cookie-cutter ways to teach.

Sessions is a great reason to attend homeschool conventions. What will you learn? PLENTY!

  • Bring a notebook.
  • Take plenty of pens.
  • Buy a snack to take along in case you get the munchies.
  • Get to the session 15 minutes early to make sure you get a seat.
  • Plan your schedule and circle the ones you want to buy the recording to.
  • Conferences help you clarify your homeschooling philosophy.
  • Help you define your child/children’s learning styles.
  • Learn about different teaching methods.

#4 You’ll Leave With A Vision and New Refreshment

Let’s be honest, by the time the homeschool convention rolls around in the spring/summer we are close to burnout or completely burned out. We need this moment in time to get ourselves together and be rejuvenated.

How does a homeschool convention do this?

  • Vital sessions for moms.
  • Time away from home in a fresh environment.
  • Fellowship with other moms and families.
  • Opportunity to see new and innovative teaching ideas.

#5 A Weekend Away

I am a travel writer and any time I get the chance to explore somewhere new, I go for it! This another great reason to attend a homeschool convention. What does a weekend away provide?

  • Time to enjoy a new city and area
  • Opportunity to teach your children history.
  • Visit the science center.
  • Have someone clean YOUR room for you.
  • You get to eat out so someone else cooks for you, serves you, and says, “My pleasure.”
  • Time to reconnect with yourself or if you bring the family, time to reconnect with them. (Your choice)
