Hot Chocolate Trail : Dublin, Ohio

How do you warm up on a cold, blustery winter day? Does warming your bones with a warm and delicious cup of cocoa sound delightful? Dublin, Ohio offers some perfect locations to give you that warm fuzzy winter feeling you are longing for in a mug! Matt and I took some date nights and went to try hot cocoa around the area and we wanted to share a few with you!

You might be surprised that Kilwins is on our list since they are primarily known for their chocolates and ice cream. I called them before we went and asked if they make hot cocoa and I was delighted to find out that indeed they do! During the late fall and winter they serve this warm and satisfying drink. Kilwins did not disappoint us with a cup of delicious cocoa made with their fabulous homemade milk chocolates. We look forward to heading there again soon and enjoying another chocolaty cup of cocoa.

Kilwins always offers warm welcomes as soon as you enter the door and on top of that, they’ll offer you a sample of their delicious homemade fudge. Make sure you check out all of their goodies such as chocolate covered strawberries, carmel apples, and chocolate dipped pretzels and take some treats home or enjoy them in their newly expanded seating area.

Before our date night quests for finding hot cocoa, we had never heard about Winans Chocolates out of Piqua, OH. We happened to be driving through Old Dublin and Matt saw the Winans sign and we headed back to see if they had any of that chocolaty goodness in a cup. They not only had the hot cocoa we were looking for, but also coffee that they roast themselves! We were captivated by the rich, yummy smells in the small store.

For those who love to explore our great state, Winans offers factory tours of their facility in Piqua for groups of 12 or more. Because this is not just another coffee shop, Winans is in their fourth generation making premium chocolates. I mean they already had me at coffee, but now they’ve kept me with chocolate! Matt and I are always excited to find new locations we can support in our communities that provide delicious products. Winans has got that covered. #WinansExperience

La Chatalaine

I love Paris and La Chatalaine transports me back to Paris where I spent 3 months when I was 18. The inviting atmosphere here by the fire in the dining area brings a sense of warm anticipation as you wait for them to deliver your cocoa. I was surprised to find out it does not come in a mug but a HUGE bowl. This is where is where a work of art and deliciousness kiss each other because it was nothing short of chocolaty goodness topped in a mound of fluffy whip cream and sprinkles of dark chocolate shavings all in a two handed bowl. Upon the first sip I thought it was more like a latte but then Matt suggested that we stir in the chocolate shavings that were sprinkled on the top. That was the trick! The chocolate pieces started to melt into the bottom of the bowl and it was fantastic to drink up even to the last drop.

While you are here you can grab some delicious pastries or baguettes to take home. There is everything from artisan breads to fruit tarts and eclairs to choose from. The cases here are full of wonderful authentic French recipes that are all made fresh daily and free from preservatives.

Johnson’s takes hot cocoa to a new level with their twist on this fabulous hot drink. Here at Johnson’s, you create your own Hot Chocolate Float. It sounds quirky but it is definitely worth the try! I stood at the case a long time trying to decide what to make my cocoa float with. Which ice cream did I want to pair with the hot chocolate….Buckeye?…Mint Chocolate chip?…or good Old Fashioned Chocolate? The combinations were endless but I finally decided to go with the Buckeye flavor and thoroughly enjoyed it to the last drop!

Now in its 4th generation, this Bexley based ice cream maker has a nice selection of flavors that should please just about any sweet tooth. I thought one might overpower the other or that it might be too cold to drink when I took my first sip of this hot cocoa/ice cream blend. But to my surprise the peanut butter and chocolate ice cream blended smoothly together in this warm and satisfying treat.

Kilwin’s comped our cocoa when they heard we were writing a blog about hot chocolate. All opinions in the blog are ours.
