We are beginning to gather gear for the great Gleason back country hike. In 2016, we did day hikes at Rocky Mountain National Park, Mount Rushmore, and Great Smoky Mountain National Park and we have been BITTEN by the hiking bug.
The challenges that face a family preparing to back country hike verses a single person do not vary much. I think, for me, it is the overwhelming responsibility to help the kids pack. The gear is not cheap and kids keep growing so I am trying to buy at reasonable prices so that the pocket book doesn’t take to big of a hit. That being said, I had one, major thing to accomplish on December 31st.
My last business of 2016 was to hit REI’s garage sale in Dublin, Ohio. I arrived at 5:30 am and hung out in my car waiting for the line to form because it was c-c-c-old. I was number 5 in line!! I was so excited to rush to the backpacks and was able to snag 3,(Osprey brand) and I zoomed over to the tents where I got 3 excellent REI brand ones.We were fortunate and found a Yakima for the top of our Buick Enclave. All that to say, I spent $800.00 and full retail was well over $2,500.00. Thank God for REI garage sale. REI.com for those of you who are not aware of the retailer.
We have a LONG way to go to gather the needed gear, but I am thrilled to have finished the year with amazing finds.
